8 Key factors of an online store (for the inquisitive)

We recognise many entrepreneurs may not have enough time to get into details of programming (and it's nothing wrong!). Especially for them we created the description of 8 key aspects, which have to be taken into consideration before creating a good online store. Remember that a badly prepared online store will not bring you any profit, on the contrary it will be an unnecessary expense.

1. Selection of the appropriate store system

When we analyse the needs of a client, we deal with choosing such a store system, which in a longer perspective will work the best for the store. We can select from, among others, the WooCommerce store system, PrestaShop, Magento and Shoper. WooCommerce and PrestaShop are ideal for less elaborated stores, because they characterise with the low cost of creating and developing an online store.

On the other hand relevant protection (provided by us) ensures stable operation. Magento aimed at very big online stores. In this system the cost of creation and development of the store is higher and requires great knowledge in programming. However Magento gives us more possibilities, for example running several stores in one administrative panel.

2. First impression (trust)

Do you think that it is enough to have an attractive offer to ensure a large number of orders? You are wrong. In e-commerce trust is the most crucial dimension. If a client perceives your store as unreliable, he will not make any order. For this reason most budget online stores are closed before the actual "opening".

According to the statistics, the first 5 seconds are the most important. After this time it is difficult to influence somebody's assessment - even unjust. If your store from the very beginning makes a positive impression, your chances for conversion increase. We wrote about conversions in point 3.

3. Orders and inquiries about the offer in online stores (conversions)

Conversion is each order, phone contact, request for an offer, filling out the contact form or adding a product to your favorites in the browser. In other words it is a presumed action of the customer. The goal of the online store creator is to increase the number of conversions. Special attention should be paid to the intuitive way of adding them to the basket and the length of the ordering path.

4. A secure, recognisable and convenient payment system

Do you know what you should look for while choosing a payment system for your online store? While making this decision take notice of its recognition among target clients, functionality (e.g. support for VISA and MasterCard, Google Pay, Apple Pay) as well as initial and fixed costs. We can offer numerous proven systems.

PayPal is one of the most universal and popular payment systems in the world. Stripe works best in the United Kingdom. DIBS, Klarna and Vipps work best in Norway. In turn, Stripe, 2Checkout and PayFast are the most suitable for German market. If you don't see your preferred payment system, let us know! We will check if it is possible to integrate this system with your online store.

5. Responsive version

Have you heard that a year ago the majority (82%) of online shopping was done by mobile devices? Because of that, adaptation to the latest smartphones and tablets is an integral part of an online store. The designer of your online store should focus both on correct display of the project in the mobile (responsive) version and convenience of its use (trends of intuitive use of UX and UI). A polished responsive version may significantly boost the number of sales - especially if you don't have a regular customer base yet.

6. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

First of all you have to learn how web browsers work. Basically, robots index data collected from websites and save them in a database. Retained information is analysed according to an algorithm created by Google specialists.

Currently, the most substantial for positioning, among others, are the amount of specific content and their frequent updating on an online store (the more, the better). One of the important elements of SEO is locating selected keywords in appropriate headings in an online store. At our disposal there are: h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6.

Remember that local positioning (e.g. online stores Leeds) is much easier because less competition. The same principle relates to popularity of your assortment - niche products and categories will appear faster in top positions. In case of popular commodities the appearance in TOP 10 in England is difficult and time consuming, however it is possible.

The second crucial element which should be taken into consideration are links to your online store. They may come from other websites or from your own store (e.g. from the Blog section).

7. Gain customers in the online store

Think that you want to open a stationary store in your city. Consider which location would you choose for the store: a crowded city centre or empty outskirts of town? An online store promotion is equal to a stationary store location. There are various ways of advertising, both paid and free. You can choose from: natural search engine results (SEO and positioning), paid search engine links (Google Ads - formerly AdWords), banner ads on other web designs (Google Ads), YouTube ads (Google Ads), entries to the online store on the recommendation (word of mouth, your clients' facebook, business cards), access to the online store from social media (your business' profile) and much more. Contact us and tell us more about your target group. We will gladly help you to acquire new customers.

8. Maintenance and security of the online store

Many programmers still do not realise how significant is the server, on which the online store is placed. We focus on both efficiency and security of components depending on the store system, number of users and online store functions. However, to comprehend this aspect properly, you need special knowledge about SysOps and DevOps, which you don't need to have. The amount of disk space, the amount of available RAM, optional resource scalability, the frequency of making autonomous backup copies of files and the database (preferably if such a copy is created daily), the cost of restoring the backup of files and the database (optimally if it is 0 GBP) are universal aspects, which should be considered.
