Creating a ticket sales platform

Creating a ticket sales platform requires designing the entire sales process from the ground up. The system must correctly handle ticket availability, reservations, payments and the generation of purchased tickets. Unlike a standard online shop, a key part of the project is the logic responsible for handling simultaneous operations from multiple users and preventing the same seat from being sold twice.

A well-designed ticket sales platform also has to withstand large, sudden spikes in traffic. Such surges typically occur when sales open for a popular event. That's why, right from the design stage, it's important to consider not only the system's functionality but also how it behaves under thousands of simultaneous users.

1. Ticket platform vs online shop - the differences

Creating a ticket sales platform requires features that a standard online shop doesn't need. On the surface, both solutions work in a similar way: the user selects a product, proceeds to payment and receives purchase confirmation. In practice, however, a ticket platform has to do far more. The system checks ticket availability in real time. It reserves specific seats. It handles simultaneous actions from many users. And it prevents the same ticket from being sold to two people at once.

Infrastructure load also looks different. In an online shop, heavy traffic tends to appear occasionally - during a sale, a product launch or the pre-Christmas period. With event ticket sales, sudden traffic spikes are the norm rather than the exception, especially when sales open for a popular event. For this reason, the architecture and infrastructure of a ticket platform need to be designed with these spikes in mind from the very start.

2. Seat reservations and handling heavy traffic

One of the biggest challenges in building a ticket sales platform is maintaining data consistency when many users are acting at the same time. The system must guarantee that the same ticket never goes to two people, even if both start the purchase process at exactly the same moment. This requires designing a proper reservation and availability-locking mechanism, along with clear rules for when a ticket is considered actually sold and when it returns to the pool of available tickets.

The platform also needs to be protected against overload. When a large number of users start buying at the same moment, the application and database are at risk of being overwhelmed. A popular event can generate a sharp surge in traffic within just a few minutes. That's why the system needs to be able to scale infrastructure on demand and protect key operations - such as reservations and payments - from the effects of that kind of overload.

3. Off-the-shelf system or a dedicated platform?

Not every company selling tickets needs to build a platform from scratch. There are ready-made online ticket sales systems available on the market. These allow businesses to use existing infrastructure: depending on the specific solution, they handle events, ticket availability, seat selection, payments and the generation of e-tickets.

A ready-made ticket sales system works well when the sales model is standard and the available features cover the seller's needs.

A dedicated ticket platform offers greater freedom to tailor the system to a specific way of running sales. It can support individual reservation rules, different ticket pools and types, advanced seat management, non-standard purchasing processes, and integrations with other systems. Building a system from scratch makes sense when ready-made solutions don't provide the required functionality, scale of operation or room for future development.

4. How much does it cost to build a ticket sales platform?

Cost depends primarily on the scope and complexity of the project. Simpler online ticketing systems typically start at around £20 000, while more advanced ticketing platforms - with sophisticated seat reservation features, multiple sales channels, and numerous integrations - typically require a budget of £100 000 or more.

Several factors affect the final pricing: how seats and reservations are handled, the number of ticket types, integrations with external systems, payments, the scope of the admin panel, and performance requirements. Before starting work, it's worth defining the sales model, how ticket availability will be managed, the required features and integrations, and the expected scale of traffic. This allows the project to be priced accurately.

Summary

Building a ticket sales platform differs from building a standard online shop primarily in terms of managing ticket availability, handling simultaneous operations, and withstanding sudden traffic spikes. Before starting work, it's worth checking whether your needs are covered by a ready-made online ticket sales system or whether a dedicated ticket platform is actually required - this is the main factor that determines the scope of work and the overall cost of the project.
